The Shaker Band Directors

Mr. Jason Clemens

Mr. Clemens is a lifelong Cleveland area resident, having grown up in Painesville and graduated from Riverside High School. He has a Bachelor of Music Degree, Cum Laude with Honors, from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH. He also has a Master's degree in Educational Administration from John Carroll University and is currently taking principal licensure classes. His major instrument is trumpet.


Mr. Clemens started his teaching career working in the Ledgemont Local Schools, where he taught band, choir and general music for five years.  In July 2008, he was hired by the Shaker Heights City Schools. He directs the high school Concert Ensemble, both 7th Grade Concert Bands, the 8th Grade Concert Band,  and one 7th Grade Choir, as well as co-directing the marching band with Mrs. Tyrrell.

Mr. Daniel Crain

Daniel Crain has been a public school music educator and band director for 12 years. This is his fourth year as a music teacher in the Shaker Heights City School District. His responsibilities include: High School Symphonic Band, Seventh Grade Concert Winds, High School Jazz Band, and Music Composition.  Mr. Crain also assists with the Pride of Shaker Heights Raider Marching Band and the Seventh and Eighth Grade Symphonic Bands. In addition to his work in Shaker Heights, Mr. Crain is also a Ph.D. candidate at Case Western Reserve University where he attends part time.

Prior to his appointment to Shaker Heights, Mr. Crain taught five years in the Mentor Public Schools where he was the head concert band and assistant marching band director. Mr. Crain also taught middle/high school band in Youngstown City Schools for one year and middle/high school band in the Perry Local Schools in Massillon, Ohio for two years.

A native of Cleveland, Mr. Crain earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Bowling Green State University in 2003 and his Master of Arts in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University in 2008. Mr. Crain has completed additional graduate coursework in conducting and music education at Capital University, The University of Texas at Austin, and Northwestern University.

In addition to his full time teaching in Shaker Heights, Mr. Crain has been involved with the Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony organization for over 17 years. He has been humbled and honored to serve as the conductor of the CYWS Group II Concert Winds since its inception in 2009, and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Co-Music Director and conductor of Group I this year. Mr. Crain has also been a performer and guest conductor with the Lakeland Civic Band for nine years. He is also an active volunteer for the Ohio Music Education Association where he served as the District VII Secretary/Treasurer from 2013 – 2015, the District IV & VII High School Honors Festival Chair from 2013 – 2014, and the Properties Committee for the 2015 OMEA Professional Development Conference in Cleveland.

Mr. Tom Deep

Mr. Deep is originally from New Castle, Pennsylvania.  He is a graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School. He received his bachelor's degree in Music Education from Kent State University in 1988.  His first teaching job was at Riverside High School in Painesville Township, Ohio, where he taught for nine years. During that time, he completed his Masters Degree in Music Education at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Deep has started work towards his Ph.D. in Music Education at Case Western Reserve University and hopes to have time to complete his degree one day.  His primary performance instrument is the euphonium, though he also plays trumpet, French horn, trombone and bass clarinet.

Mr. Deep was hired in 1997 by the Shaker Heights City Schools system.  He currently teaches at Woodbury Elementary.  Up to 2013, he directed the Shaker High School Wind Ensemble, the 7th Grade Concert Winds and Music Composition Class at the high school. In addition, he assisted with the high school Jazz Program, the middle school bands and has been responsible for the planning of the international trips the Shaker Bands have taken.

Mr. Bill Hughes

Mr. Hughes is the Director of Jazz for the Shaker Heights School District and the director of the High School Wind Ensemble.  He has 20 years of experience as a jazz artist, orchestra director, band director and private music teacher.  His main performance instruments are the flute and saxophone. his secondary instruments are the piano, clarinet and trumpet.

Mr. Hughes has a Bachelors degree in Music Performance and a Masters degree in Instrumental Conducting, both from Cleveland State University. He is a recipient of the Who's Who award among American Teachers. He has performed at The Boarding House, Club Isabella, The Cleveland Bop Stop, The Mardi Gras, Cain Park and the Cleveland Amphitheater.

Ms. Kristin Koterba
Kristin Koterba started teaching in the Shaker Schools in the fall of 2014. She was a student teacher for the Shaker Bands in 2005 from Kent State and graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education and Flute Performance.  Since then, Kristin has taught elementary music and assisted with high school band for two years in South Carolina and taught middle school band for seven years in Georgia.  She completed her Masters Degree at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago in 2013 and serves on the alumni board. She began work on her Ph.D. in Music at Kent State University in 2017. Kristin’s main role is to work with the bands at Woodbury and help with the marching band. 

Mr. Joe Kulikowski

Mr. Kulikowski grew up in Seven Hills.  He has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance, a Teaching Certification and a Master's Degree in Music Performance, all from Cleveland State University. He was the winner of the 1st Annual Cleveland State University Concerto Competitio

n in 2002.  He has subbed with the Akron Symphony and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and has played many shows at the Porthouse Theatre and Playhouse Square.  The trombone is his primary instrument.  He can play any of the brass instruments and woodwinds.  Mr. Kulikowski has been with the Shaker Heights School District since 2008.

Mr. Adrian Pocaro

Mr. Pocaro grew up in Twinsburg, Ohio.  His main performance instrument is the trumpet. His secondary instruments are the French horn, and Euphonium.  Mr. Pocaro graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education in 2000. In 2001 he was hired by the Shaker Schools as high school Concert Band director and brass instructor at Woodbury Elementary.  He was the Marching Band Director from 2004-2009 and Co-Directed the Marching Band from 2010-2014. In 2015, he became lead band director at Shaker Middle School, and he currently assists the High School Band program as a sectional instructor. 

Mrs. Gianna Tyrrell

Gianna Tyrrell is the newest addition to our band director team and is thrilled with the opportunity to be a part of the incredible band program at Shaker.  Mrs. Tyrrell grew up in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.  She has a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University.  Before she came to Shaker, she taught Middle School and High School at Geneva High School for three years.  The clarinet and piano are her primary instruments.   Her secondary instruments are Saxophone and Flute. She teaches at the High School, and also at Woodbury Elementary School. She is co-director of the marching band with Mr. Clemens and will be teaching Concert Band at the high school.
